Building Capacity and Support for the Care of the Elderly In Nigeria.

The Voice Elderly Community of Practice embarked on a journey to exchange knowledge and experience in order to enhance and reinforce the abilities of its members in various aspects of their work with the elderly population in Nigeria.

The Growth Clinic workshop aimed to uncover the individual strengths and skills of each organization within the community, and through shared knowledge, enhance the quality of service provided to our elderly population. This workshop presented an opportunity for introspection, recognizing our weaknesses, and learning from the strengths of other members within the Elderly Community of Practice to expand our knowledge.

A key outcome of this two-day meeting was the development of a learning document on elderly care. This document will serve as a guide for the Community of Practice, providing best practices for managing the elderly in our modern world, which is increasingly characterized by self-centeredness and a lack of compassion and empathy, particularly regarding the needs of old people in our society.
On Day 2 of the Voice Elderly Community of Practice workshop event, attendees were immersed several insightful and impactful sessions. There was a poignant theatrical piece, vividly illustrating the pervasive issue of elder abuse within our society. Dr. Agatha Nnaji of DewDrop Foundation captivated the audience with a presentation on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), centered around the theme "Seniors deserve our respect and attention."

Participants were equipped with essential caregiving abilities for older individuals through a comprehensive training session, covering topics such as caregiving, personal care services, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and managing cultural diversity.

Significantly, a discussion ensued, underscoring the importance of managing records and information in the context of elderly caregiving. As the workshop drew to a close, attendees shared valuable feedback and took away invaluable lessons, while simultaneously launching the eldercare learning document, solidifying their commitment to the cause.
